Description
For full orchestra
duration: 10:30
It was with great deliberation and care that I chose the title and mood for my first work for full orchestra. I knew I wanted to create a bright, stunning work with a brilliant, shimmering and royal quality. It was weeks later that I realized that these qualities were embodied by a daily presence in my life ~ the sun. From there the compositional material sorted itself into three sections based on different aspects of the sun: shining, burning, and glowing. During the shining sections, cascades of sound filter down through the instruments leaving room for broad expansions of sound in the lower strings and brass. The orchestra then changes its intensity to depict the comforting warmth and glow that we feel in the presence of the sun. It is here that the horn player reveals a lush, regal melody that will be repeated later by the entire string section. This melody transitions into the third section of the piece, characterized by frantic strings and punctuated with timpani and floor toms burning into a shimmering climax of cascades. From here to the end the piece explodes with all three sections of brilliance: shining, glowing and burning. They combine to showcase the true power of the sun in all its glory ~ strong, brilliant, powerful, and a force to be reckoned with and admired.
