Premiered in 2024, this piano solo accompaniment to “A Rock In My Throat” was commissioned by the book’s author, Kao Kalia Yang. In this moving true story, Kao Kalia Yang shares her experiences as a young Hmong refugee in the United States navigating two cultures and two languages. She sees what happens as her parents enter the English-speaking world + are met with rudeness and disrespect. And in a silent act of rebellion, Kalia stops speaking at school. Kao Kalia Yang’s text weaves together heartbreak and hope, accompanied by stunning illustrations from Jiemei Lin in her debut picture book.
