Our intention with “A Silver Thread” is for each individual choir to perform alone in order (Choir I-IV), then for all choirs to perform the songs together. If each song is done intermittently throughout a concert, we would recommend that at the culmination the songs are performed a second time alone before they are all brought together. Part of the magic of partner songs is to be able to recognize the independent aspects of each song before they come together, and for an audience this is amplified with repetition and familiarity. If there are young singers involved, we recommend having an additional conductor to facilitate their entrances and cut-offs.
In preparation, each choir should practice singing along with both piano accompaniments (except Choir IV), since the harmonies will be different with all choirs together.
Text
Choir I – Unison
Here
we are watching
this silver thread
through an open gate,
around our lives
keeps us from loneliness,
keeps us from helplessness.
It means I am not alone in this world.
It’s made
of persistence,
this silver thread,
and hope.
Choir II – 2-part treble
Joining us
a silver thread–
beauty runs through.
Every wall
an open gate
so I am not alone in this world.
This thread is
our future and hope.
Choir III – SAB
You are enough.
You are cherished.
You are the song
we all sing.
You will become
what you were made for.
Your reach is far
beyond these years.
Tell yourself
I am not alone in this world.
For you:
an open gate,
a silver thread.
Choir IV – SATB
When we’re not watching
a bird takes flight
looking for a place
to call its own.
And in that bird heart
there lives a song
that says
I am not alone in this world.
The bird
makes a nest
with a silver thread.
