This is the 2005 winner of the VocalEssence Welcome Christmas! Carol Contest. Written for SSATBB chorus, mezzo soprano solo, and cello solo, this multi-textured work elegantly conveys the story of the birth of Jesus, ending in a chorale that is as tender and mild as the story itself.
Performed by VocalEssence, under the direction of Philip Brunelle, with Tony Ross, cellist of the Minnesota Orchestra
Text
See amid the winter snow,
Born for us on earth below,
See the tender Lamb appears,
Promised from eternal years.
Hail, hail, thou ever-blessed morn!
Hail, redemption’s happy dawn!
Sing through all Jerusalem,
Christ is born in Bethlehem.
Lo, within a manger lies
He who built the starry skies
Say, ye holy shepherds say
What joyful news you heard today!
“As we watched at dead of night,
Lo, we saw a wondrous light.
Angels singing peace on earth
Told us of the Savior’s birth.”
Hail.
Sacred infant, all divine,
What a tender love was Thine
Thus to come from highest bliss
Down to such a world as this.
Hail, thou ever-blessed morn!
Teach, O teach us, holy child,
By Thy Face so meek and mild,
Teach us to resemble Thee,
In Thy Sweet Humility.
